The 15th International Donders Cognition Brain and Technology summer school will take place in Berg en Dal, Nijmegen, the Netherlands from 4-15 September. The school addresses students and scientists involved in research at the interface between biology and future and emerging technologies, emphasising the principles underlying brains and their translation to avant-garde technologies. Students will attend lectures from prominent scientists in the field of brain research, cognitive science, and neuroscience, as well as AI and related fields. Students will also participate in tutorials and work on projects that will be presented at the end of the summer school.

Application details

Registration to the school includes submitting a short CV and a letter of motivation. The deadline for application is set for July 31st. All students (bachelor, master, PhD) and postdocs are welcome to apply.

Radboud University - Donders Toolkits

NeuroimagingEssentials of major neuroimaging techniques (EEG, MEG, fMRI, PET, TMS) – 4-8 September 2023

This tool-kit course is an intensive 5-days course, which will provide participants with the essentials of all major neuroimaging techniques, including ERP, MEG, fMRI, PET, and TMS. Aspects of the measurement methods, design requirements, experimental set-up, image processing and statistical analyses will be discussed. The course will be in the form of lectures, video demonstrations, question-answer sessions, and on-site lab visits & demos. The course will be given by qualified experts from the Donders – and other research centres.

Preliminary program

Advanced (f)MRI: From Image Acquisition to Computation Model – 18-22 September 2023

This intensive 5-day course will provide an overview of the MR Methods (that can be) used in  Cognitive Neuroimaging. The first part of the course covers the basic MR physics needed to obtain MR signal, create MR images and discusses the physical mechanisms driving the MRI contrast (beyond fMRI) and artifacts.  The second part of the course is dedicated to model free and model based fMRI processing strategies.

Each day will consist of a set of morning lectures followed by an afternoon with various hands-on sessions based either in MATLAB or FSL. Direct interactions with the lecturers will be promoted throughout.

Preliminary Program

Application details

PhD students and senior researchers are welcome to apply. Registration to the Donders toolkits includes submitting a short CV and a letter of motivation. Besides, the following information is required: name, email, organisation, town, country and phase of study (PhD or senior researcher).

Universidad Miguel Hernández

Please note, the following courses are taught in Spanish

  • Women in the Life and Works of Miguel Hernández

2,5 ECTS
20-22 September
Venue: UMH, Campus of Orihuela-Salesas
Language of instruction: Spanish
Eligibility requirements: No academic requirements

This course, which commemorates the 80th anniversary of the death of the  poet Miguel Hernández, analyses the significance of his life and work, from its uniqueness and impact on the academic and social environment then and now. The course  includes plenary invited lectures of great experts in the works of the poet together with literary workshops.

  • The Role of Society in Defense of Cultural Heritage

2,5 ECTS
21-28 September (The program is distributed on days 21, 22, 25, 26 and 28 of September, from 17:00 to 21:00h)
Venue: Crevillent
Language of instruction: Spanish
Eligibility requirements: No academic requirements

This course aims to foster the concern, respect and public appreciation for the uniqueness of our own Cultural Heritage. It is based on a collection of lectures about measures to support efforts dedicated to increasing public awareness, from various spheres, but mainly from the academic field. The course is based on the consideration of educating in Cultural Heritage as a relevant way to reinforce and empower the identity of a community.

  • Twilight Photography of Motion

2,5 ECTS
11-14 September
Venue: UMH, Campus of Altea
Main Professor: Luis en el Bosque
Language of instruction: Spanish
Eligibility requirements: No academic requirements. But having a camera that allows manual mode (diaphragm ratio, shutter speeds, and ISO). Basic knowledge on using these manual functionalities is required.

This course is provided by a professional of night and astronomical photography in the unique surroundings of the coastal landscape of Altea. This course is a new edition of several previous successfully developed ones all along the spanish geography. Its program contains a practical training which will be developed in different natural locations of Altea and surroundings, during the afternoons and evenings (looking for the dark conditions required).

Karolinska Institutet

KI offers four graduate levels courses (for PhD students), part of what is called “Frontiers in Neuroscience” supported by StratNeuro as part of the doctoral education: https://ki.se/en/neuro/doctoral-programme-in-neuroscience

The purpose of the course is for participants to gain knowledge concerning genetics, molecular mechanisms as well as clinical features and treatment strategies of neurodegenerative disorders. To gain and apply new knowledge, participants will (in addition to lectures by experts in the field) prepare and give own oral presentations as well as ask and answer questions in the group during the course week. The course will allow interaction between PhD-students and students of the KI Master’s programme in biomedicine (elective course in their second year), all with a special interest in neuroscience.

The purpose of the course is to provide doctoral students in the field of neuroscience with an overview of current state-of-the art approaches, technologies and concepts used for understanding of the brain’s circuits and functions in animal models. There is a very strong emphasis on research in mice. All invited speakers have made seminal contributions to how we currently study and understand the brain, and there will be ample opportunities for the students to interact with the speakers, and discuss aspects relevant to their own work.

This course aims to provide a basis in cognitive neuroscience and the neuroanatomy that supports it. The course will enable participants to get a good understanding of how the brain makes decisions, forms long term memories and handles emotions.

Developmental biology lies at the heart of an effort to understanding complex biological systems. By studying how neural circuits are assembled we can extrapolate key aspects of their function as well as devise strategies for their repair. This course is given to deepen the understanding of how molecular and cellular mechanisms underlie neurobiological function and to widen the horizon of students within the strong Karolinska neuroscience community.

Application details

PhD students are welcome to apply. Deadline for application is set to August 22. Required knowledge for the courses is background in neuroscience at the graduate level, with some experience or research interest in the topic of the chosen course. In the motivation letter, each student should explain how taking this course will benefit their training and PhD research.

Université de Lille

The first edition of the “Autumn School on Closed Loop Neurotechnologies: from sensors to applications” will take place between October 18-20, 2023 on site at the University of Lille, in France.
