Katherine Breton, the Student Council Communication Manager: "We are like the bridge beetween students and the central office"

Originally from Mexico, Katherine Breton is currently doing her Bachelor in Biomedicine at Karolinska Institute, Sweden. She joined the Student Council in November 2024, stepping into the role of Communication Manager, where she now plays a vital part in shaping how NeurotechEU speaks to — and with — its student community.

Katherine’s energy and clarity make her a natural fit for the role of Communication Manager. With a passion for connecting people and ideas, she’s helping the Student Council strengthen its voice and visibility — one story, post, and project at a time.

In our conversation, Kath shared her motivations, the challenges of her position, and the initiatives she’s most excited about.

What motivated you to become part of the Student Council leadership?

Some of the former members of the Council told me that new positions would be opening up, and that’s how I initially found out about it. What drew me in was the idea of being involved in something at a European level — and the chance to see how people from different countries, cultures, and working styles come together toward a shared goal.

It’s been inspiring to experience that diversity and collaboration first-hand.

What do you find most challenging about your role?

I see the Student Council as a bridge between students and the central office. One of the biggest challenges is making sure this bridge works both ways — that students’ needs and feedback make it to the central office, and that what’s happening within NeurotechEU reaches the wider student community in a way that’s clear and engaging.

It’s not just about sharing updates — it’s about making sure NeurotechEU is understood and felt as something meaningful by students across all partner universities.

What are your main goals for this term?

My biggest focus is to centralize internal communications. There’s so much happening across different Synapses Clubs, and my goal is to make sure we have a system in place to collect, curate, and share that information efficiently, both within the Student Council and with our broader network.

Externally, I’m also part of the team managing the Instagram account @theneurotecheu.synapses, which is one of our key platforms for reaching students.

Additionally, I’m involved in the renovation of the Student Council page on the official NeurotechEU website. It’s an exciting project that will hopefully make our work more visible and accessible.

Are there any upcoming projects you’re especially excited about?

Yes! One fun short-term initiative we’re working on is a creative campaign where each Student Council member or team represents a different part of the brain. It’s a playful but meaningful way to showcase how each role within the Council contributes to the larger mission— just like different brain regions working together in harmony. It’s a great example of how we’re trying to make communication more engaging, creative, and collaborative.
